Created in 2012, FSD Africa is a multi-million-pound financial sector development programme based in Nairobi. It is funded by the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) and aims to reduce poverty across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) by building financial markets that are efficient, robust and inclusive. It acts as a market catalyst, providing technical know-how and capital to champions of change whose ideas, influence and actions will make finance more useful to Africans businesses and households. It is FSDA’s belief that strong and responsive financial markets will be central to Africa’s emerging growth story.
FSD Africa deploys Development Capital (‘DevCap’) to de-risk investments in businesses and financial structures that can significantly scale depth and reach of the financial sector in Africa. These investments are aimed at making financial markets more innovative, competitive and accessible. From a first capital allocation of GBP30 million provided by UKaid, FSD Africa will raise additional DevCap to be managed under its subsidiary, FSD Africa (Investments) Ltd.
Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer (CIO), the Investment Manager (IM) will work with the CIO to develop and execute the DevCap investment strategy and goals – specifically in opportunity identification, deal-sourcing, investment memo preparation, due diligence, structuring and negotiating deals, closing and post-investment monitoring of deal performance. The IM will have prime responsibility for conducting market intelligence and opportunity analysis, and for advanced financial analysis of investment opportunities. Additionally, the IM will be responsible for preparing the overall portfolio performance and returns analysis, and reporting. The IM may be asked to serve on oversight committees for the investments (Board or otherwise), and to provide technical input to business development of the investee entity.
Background and qualifications:
- A good quality Master’s degree from an internationally-recognised university
- At least 8 years’ experience of transacting in an investment-led environment
- Excellent skills in written and spoken English
- Proven ability and experience in investment analysis, modelling, valuations and returns.
